I use plant and insect extracts as well as mineral colored earth for my paints. These natural pigments impart the traditional colors of my work. From these pigments I make my own paints by hand. In these photos are jars of pigment and a retablo in the process of being painted.

The painted piece is then coated with pinion sap varnish which is made by dissolving pitch nuggets in grain alcohol (mula).  In the photo above is a chunk of pitch. The coffee cans contain many pitch nuggets. After it is collected we allow it to dry for several years. In the bottom photo you can see the varnish mix contained in the jar.

PINION
My family and I collect pitch from pinion trees in the San Luis Valley. Unfortunately, the pinion ( pronounced pin-yun' ) trees are falling prey to pine bark beetles. You can learn more about the pine beetle and their impact on pinion and other pines by visiting the
Rocky Mountain Forest Service site.
